Breast Cancer Awareness in October

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease. Over the years, it has gained prominence around the world and is a very relevant topic in almost anywhere with the disease being highly prevalent in most countries worldwide.

Early Detection: There is a common misconception that breast cancer only affects older women. Global studies have shown that women between the age of 20 and 34, with a strong family history of the disease are most susceptible to the disease. All women, regardless of family history, must conduct an annual mammogram, after reaching the age of 35. Early detection of breast cancer is key to survival, and if women can be educated to self-check, this will help increase awareness and ultimately save lives.

It is okay to talk about it: Women with breast cancer find it inappropriate to discuss the disease with their communities because it is still deemed a taboo. It is imperative that we communicate with one another on the prevalence of breast cancer, importance of early detection and self-examination.

The unspoken truth: Breast cancer in men is rare, which is why there is very little awareness amongst men. However, men carry a higher chance of mortality than women as they are less likely to associate a lump with breast cancer, causing a delay in seeking treatment.
